Preference is given to the following characteristics when evaluating grant applications:
- New or pilot projects needing seed money, rather than ongoing program or project funding.
- Research protocols that focus on clinical care, rather than “bench research”
- Equipment or educational materials relevant to respiratory assessment, respiratory care, the prevention of respiratory disease or the maintenance of respiratory health. (e.g. spirometers, oximeters, patient or professional education materials)
- Projects that focus on the medically underserved and/or economically disadvantaged
- Projects to be implemented in Western Washington
- Relatively modest budgets (most grants range from $500 to $20,000)
- No likely alternative source of funding for the project
- Project realistically could be completed within one to two years of funding
Salary support:
The Firland Foundation generally does not fund ongoing salaries. Exceptions to this include:
- Hourly payments for research assistants and/or subjects participating in clinical research trials
- Pulmonary fellowship funding for education and training related to tuberculosis research or clinical care (see Cedric Northrop Fellowship Fund, below)
Institutional overheads costs (indirect costs) will not be covered by the Firland Foundation.
Human Subjects Review Board approval:
When funding is provided for research activities, Human Subjects Review Board approval is required prior to release of funds. Because timely completion of funded projects is desirable, research projects for which the Human Subjects Review application has already been submitted (or is ready for submission) may be viewed more favorably.
