In keeping with the The Firland Foundation’s mission of support for medically underserved individuals with TB and other chronic respiratory problems, and for the often under-funded agencies that advocate for them, grant applications that address such care needs are encouraged. Following are examples of projects supported by Firland over the past several years.

2009

A Proposal for the Construction of an Isolation Ward for the Care of Tuberculosis Patients in Saint-Marc, Haiti. Partners in Health (PI: Brandi Conforti). $25,000

Expanding Tuberculosis Care,Training and Research Opportunities in Kenya. Departments of Global Health, Medicine (Infectious Disease), and Pediatrics, University of Washington; (PI: Judd L Walson,MD, MPH) $8,9993

2008

Quantiferon-Gold Testing. Collville Indian Health Centers, WA. Funded initial trial period using QFT and the development of culturally appropriate TB educational materials (PI: Elizabeth Sullivan. PHN). $8,782

Partnership Proposal, Washington Sate TB Advisory Council. American Lung Association in Washington. Funds staff support to facilitate state-wide advocacy role of the council. (PI: Astrid Berg) $6,000.

Numerous other grants ranging from $1000 t0 $5,000 have been funded to purchase equipment (e.g. pulse oximeters, spirometers, peak flow meters) and the development of educational materials to a variety of agencies in the Seattle/King County area.
